Welcome to South Congregational Church: Our Faith Community

WelcomeSouthChurch

Welcome to South Congregational Church, a member of the United Church of Christ. We are a community that belongs to the Christian tradition, a river that has run through history giving life to individuals, communities and societies since ancient times, growing the fruit of love and peace, joy and justice.

The river of our faith is a conversation, prompted by the Spirit, which flows through many questions: Who is God and what is God’s will? What does it mean to be human? How do we recognize our differences and stay in relationship? Is there meaning in suffering? How can people of different faiths live peacefully together? What is the deepest joy? This conversation, begun in our scripture, the Hebrew and Christian testaments, continues today and calls our voices to join in. In the words of the U.C.C., “God Is Still Speaking”: to us individually and as a congregation.

Our high water mark is the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ: Who proclaimed that love of God and neighbor are the foundation of the law and the prophets; Who showed us the way to break the cycle of violence by forgiving those who crucified him; Whose resurrection gives us hope in all things; and Whose Spirit ignited the church and moves among us today.

We are guided by: The Word of God that can be discovered in the words of scripture; The centrality of the worship of God; Mission to the world; and Hospitality to any and all who would want to be part of such a faith community.

Faith is more important to us than belief. Faith is the willingness to trust that we belong to God, that mysterious presence who challenges and comforts us from the center of all things and through whom we all belong to the world. Beliefs are intellectual constructs about that presence and, while they are important, are secondary. In our river of conversation we agree to disagree about particular beliefs, yet we are united by one goal: that God’s “will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

You are welcome to explore our life together and if you feel you want to be part of such a community, please contact me or one of our church members.

In peace,

Rev. Dennis P. Moon

Youth Gathering: Get Involved & Have Fun!

youthgroupHow about roasting marshmallows while talking about wandering in the wilderness and recognizing the similar feeling you have wandering through the hallways at school? Or maybe an impromptu ultimate Frisbee game before watching a movie about compassion?

Youth Fellowship at South Church is an open and welcoming group that provides activities and hang out time for high school youth. Led by Rev. Tamara Torres, who excels at providing youth a place to be themselves, our fellowship program offers meeting time, activities, retreats, and mission opportunities which encourage youth to stay connected to a faith community. Want to know more? Check out the Youth section under Connect / Education.

Senior Fellowship: "Wisdom is with aged men, with long life is understanding." Job 12:12

There is nothing better than a pot of homemade soup and the company of friends. This monthly luncheon group explores a biblical passage and travels wherever the discussion takes them. Building community is the main focus however, so mark your calendars for the third Thursday of the month at Noon and come share in the warmth of good food and good friends.

Soup-er Seniors is a monthly experience(normally the third Friday of the month) aimed at the 50 and over crowd, with a lively conversation that surrounds those who gather for a luncheon meal. Soup is provided, and guests can bring a sandwich and perhaps a dessert to share. Topics are chosen out of those submitted by attendees, and the conversation explores how the current topic affect us all. It's always an inclusive, fun and intellectually stimulating meal!

We agreed that “senior” is a noun which has no pejorative meaning and we agreed we would have soup each month.  So, for now, “Soup-er Seniors”  (pun intended) is our name.

"Wisdom is with aged men,With long life is understanding." Job 12:12

Spiritual Vitality for Women

Guided by a book study on a spiritual theme, women gather twice a month to discover together meaningful ways to engage with the sacred in everyday life.  We help each other live with purpose and support each other in discerning how the Spirit is moving in our hearts and lives.  For more information contact Rev. Sandra Fischer, (860)653-7289.
