Mattie Banzhaf

Mattie's life is music, especially directing choirs. She feels very much at home at South Church with supportive and musical ministers, faithful Choir and Bell Ringers, a superlative Organist, and a singing congregation. Mattie also accompanies Suzuki string classes for the Hartt Community Division, plays piano with a contradance band, and directs or sings in many small ensembles including MadSingers sight-singing group each Wednesday. She helps steer the Bruce Porter Memorial Music Series each year.

Mattie began sightsinging madrigals at the age of 1 with her father's group of amateur musicians in The Bronx, NY. In her senior year at Vassar College she switched her major from English to Music, and went on to teaching fellowships at Queens College, CUNY, and at The Hartt School of Music, where she got a master's and CT teaching certificate. This is why she related so well to Bruce Porter, long-time Music Director at South Church, and why he tapped her to take over the Choir, which she loves. Mattie taught music in schools for over 20 years, and she’s been Music Director in churches including West Avon Congregational Church and the Unitarian Meeting House of Hartford. She is very grateful to be able to use her skills at South Church, and to help carry out Bruce’s vision for great music in Granby..
