Youth News and Happenings!!
By Dawn Karlson, Minister of Youth Development
Tonight, I drove home from church after O.W.L. class in a wintry mix that began with rain, progressed to ice and ended in a beautiful snowfall. Transitions are like that… we step into the weather not knowing what to expect, then somewhere in the mix we start sliding around trying to get a grip and then finally, at some point, land in a new place and can rest long enough to notice the beauty of the new spot.
Pre-teens and teens today are dealing with these transitions, just like generations did in the past, but with some different inclement weather and icy patches. When our Faith Journey class recently identified challenges “unique” to their generation, they cited fear of school shootings, questions of technology and increasing stress about grades, standardized tests and college. AND… the crazy games and spirited conversation at last week’s Y.E.S. group and the outbursts of laughter at tonight’s O.W.L. sexuality program, remind me our young people are RESILIENT! Holding spaces for youth to name their challenges, build their “tool bag” for life, discover their deep, spiritual selves, breathe and play a little, and explore issues of sexuality & service… These are sacred ministries. Thank you, South Church, for supporting them
