Sandra Fischer

Sandra’s journey to South Church began many years ago in the mid-west when she felt the call to ordained ministry as a young girl. Being raised in a theologically conservative denomination that didn’t ordain women prevented Sandra from responding to God’s call in her life as a young adult.

A detour through law school in Virginia at Washington and Lee School of Law and many years as a practicing attorney in the Hartford, CT area, finally ended when she chose at age 40 to commence her seminary education; first at Hartford Seminary and then at Yale Divinity School

That intellectual journey was paralleled by a faith journey that brought her from her roots in Wisconsin, though various other denominations including Episcopal and Unitarian/Universalist, until she found her home in the United Church of Christ. The first time she heard the UCC welcoming motto: “No matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here” she knew she had found her spiritual home.

Sandra’s spiritual gifts make her wonderfully suited to her position as Associate Minister of Adult Spiritual Life and Outreach at South Church. Just as South Church reached out to Sandra to welcome her as a pastoral intern during her field work requirement for Yale Divinity School, in her current position Sandra reaches out to members old and new to help them find their own spiritual path and feel at home here at South Church. Although it is difficult to wrap up the glow of a person in words, one South Church member puts it this way: “The Spirit moves through Sandra like sunlight through water.” She lives in North Granby with her husband Will and their two children. Sandra enjoys spending time with her family, singing, fiber arts, gardening, reading, hiking and cross-country skiing. Sandra would like nothing better than to welcome you to her office for a cup of tea to discuss how the Spirit is moving in your heart and life.
