Lent Testimonials

Lent:  Moving from “giving up” to “giving out.”

This Lent we are asking people to consider moving from “giving up something for Lent” to “giving out during Lent.”  God loves each of us unconditionally and when we are conduits of God’s love, we enter into a deeper relationship with God. We become co-creators with God of the beloved community and a more compassionate, just and peaceful world.

The tradition of giving up something for Lent is literally a way of following Jesus.  After Jesus was baptized, he spent 40 days fasting in the desert to prepare himself for ministry by entering into a deeper relationship with God.  The Bible tells how Jesus was tempted by Satan and resisted temptation.  We are asking people to consider following Jesus in another way.

Jesus taught that the Kingdom of God is at hand.  All we need to do to enter the Kingdom is to love God and love our neighbors as ourselves.  Perhaps one path is to focus on “giving out.”  We are asking members of our community to share their thoughts on giving out to ourselves, our families, our neighbors, our church, our planet, and to all people, especially people different than us.
